The Republican National Convention came to Cleveland in June 1924 to nominate its presidential candidate, which marked the first national political convention to come to Cuyahoga County. This convention was also the first to be broadcast on the radio. The image of the elephant could be seen displayed all over town.

John F. Royal, manager of Keith’s Palace Theater and quite the showman, furnished the real elephants that attracted a crowd in front of Public Hall eager to see the Republican Party’s mascots. Cleveland’s civic leaders offered the Republican Party free use of Public Hall and a $125,000 expense fund.
